Ghana Pushes Power Sector Transformation with GRIDCo Board Inauguration and Strategic Investments
Accra, Ghana | 19 August 2025 – The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor (MP), inaugurated the newly constituted board of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), charging its leadership to accelerate grid expansion in line with the nation’s growing energy demand. The move underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the transmission backbone, ensuring efficiency, reliability, and sustainability across the national power infrastructure.
The new GRIDCo board, chaired by Ing. Kwame Asante, includes a diverse mix of professionals tasked with guiding the company’s strategic direction. The members are:
Ing. Kwame Asante – Chairman
Ms. Doris Agyemang – Member
Mr. Michael Ofori – Member
Dr. Evelyn Owusu – Member
Mr. Samuel Boateng – Member
Ing. Comfort Mensah – Member
Hon. Kwabena Owusu-Afriyie – Member
Together, they are expected to provide governance oversight and technical direction as GRIDCo modernizes Ghana’s power transmission system.
The inauguration comes at a time when GRIDCo is implementing landmark transmission projects in partnership with development partners. In July, GRIDCo, the European Union, and France launched the €8.7 million Ahodwo–Anwomaso transmission line reconstruction project with a stone-laying ceremony in Kumasi. The project, designed to improve system stability and reduce transmission losses in the Ashanti Region, is part of broader efforts to modernize Ghana’s power grid and support industrial growth. By strengthening key transmission corridors, the initiative aligns with Ghana’s long-term goal of building a robust, interconnected, and future-ready energy system.
In parallel, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition is advancing electrification efforts for underserved populations through the Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Programme (SREP). The program targets off-grid and island communities, deploying renewable mini-grids, solar home systems, and productive-use energy solutions to extend access and stimulate local economies. This initiative complements GRIDCo’s national mandate by bridging the energy access gap, ensuring that sustainable development reaches Ghana’s most remote regions.
The dual thrust of strengthening grid infrastructure while expanding renewable access highlights Ghana’s strategic approach to energy security. On one hand, GRIDCo is tasked with delivering stability and capacity for an increasingly urban and industrial economy; on the other, SREP represents a forward-looking investment in inclusivity and sustainability. Together, these initiatives reflect a balanced roadmap that combines traditional transmission strength with renewable energy innovation.
As Ghana pursues grid expansion, renewable integration, and rural electrification, the alignment of domestic policy and international partnership signals confidence in the country’s energy trajectory. The initiatives launched this year demonstrate not only investment in infrastructure but also in resilience, inclusivity, and long-term national competitiveness.
