9th Ghana Energy Awards 2025: A Definitive Benchmark for Ghana’s Energy Sector

Against the backdrop of sweeping reforms and renewed momentum in Ghana’s energy landscape, the 9th Ghana Energy Awards (GEA) convened the sector’s foremost leaders to celebrate excellence and chart the course ahead. This prestigious event reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to energy security, sustainability, and innovation as key drivers of national development.

Ministerial Vision: Reform, Green Transition, and Stability

Hon. Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, opened the evening with a keynote address reflecting on a year marked by bold policy actions and operational turnaround. He highlighted key achievements, including over US$300 million in cost savings, extended periods of grid stability, and progress in expanding gas supply to power plants — critical pillars underpinning Ghana’s evolving energy future. The Minister’s remarks underscored the sector’s dual focus on economic growth and environmental stewardship, central to Ghana’s green transition ambitions.

Upstream Excellence and Strategic Leadership

Eni Ghana Exploration & Production Company Limited, led by Maurizio Pinna, captured significant honours as Upstream Company of the Year and CEO of the Year (Petroleum) respectively. Their instrumental role in stabilising oil production and advancing field developments, notably the Pecan project, reinforced Ghana’s position as a reliable energy producer and gas supplier.

Strengthening the Downstream and Advocacy Landscape

In downstream petroleum, StarOil Company Limited was recognised as Downstream Company of the Year for operational excellence and market leadership. The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) earned distinction through two honours: the Energy Signature Award presented to Duncan Amoah, and Energy Advocate of the Year awarded to Dr. Riverson Oppong. Their effective advocacy and stewardship have enhanced market transparency and consumer protection.

Power Transmission and Local Content Progress

The Energy Company of the Year (Power) award was bestowed on Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) in recognition of its vital role in grid reliability and renewable integration. The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) received the Outstanding Local Content Initiative Award, reflecting its commitment to enhancing Ghanaian participation and capability within the oil and gas sector.

Sector-Wide Excellence: People, Innovation, and Sustainability

The Awards also honoured key individuals such as Ing. Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo (Energy Personality of the Year, Male) and Judith Adjobah Blay (Energy Personality of the Year, Female), alongside visionary leadership from Ing. Kow Eduakwa Sam of Bui Power Authority. Renewable energy and clean initiatives featured prominently, with SolPower Company Limited and Bui Power Authority receiving accolades for their pioneering contributions.

Emerging leaders, innovation champions, and corporate social responsibility efforts rounded out the broad spectrum of recognition, highlighting the sector’s depth and dynamism.
