Tema | 28 August 2025 — The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has reinforced its commitment to safety and operational resilience by implementing enhanced emergency preparedness measures during its ongoing turnaround maintenance program.
As part of this initiative, TOR has partnered with the Ghana National Ambulance Service to ensure rapid medical response capability across its facilities. This collaboration guarantees that in the event of an incident, workers and surrounding communities can benefit from swift and professional emergency support.
In addition, TOR has strengthened its collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service by organizing intensive fire training exercises tailored to refinery operations. The program equipped staff with practical firefighting skills, enhanced situational awareness, and reinforced teamwork in handling potential fire-related emergencies. These proactive steps form part of a broader safety-first culture being embedded into TOR’s operations.
Turnaround maintenance—an essential process for restoring refinery units, upgrading systems, and extending asset life—often comes with heightened safety risks due to complex technical procedures and the involvement of multiple contractors. TOR’s leadership emphasized that prioritizing emergency preparedness not only safeguards its workforce and facilities but also reflects its responsibility to protect nearby communities and the environment.
By aligning technical maintenance with strengthened emergency protocols, TOR is positioning itself as a model for safety and operational excellence in Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector. The partnerships and training underscore the refinery’s long-term vision: to remain a trusted national asset delivering energy security while upholding the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental stewardship.
