New GNPC Board Inaugurated to Steer Ghana’s Energy Future
Accra, June 30, 2025 – The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, has officially inaugurated a newly constituted Board of Directors for the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), urging them to deliver bold, strategic leadership that aligns with the country’s long-term energy transition goals and secures Ghana’s energy future.
Speaking at the ceremony in Accra, the Minister described GNPC as “not just another state-owned institution,” but rather the flagship entity in Ghana’s upstream oil and gas industry, playing a pivotal role in national development and energy security. He challenged the new Board to uphold the principles of accountability, transparency, and strategic foresight, particularly in the face of complex global energy dynamics.
“GNPC is a national asset critical to the country’s economic growth. Through prudent investments and partnerships, it contributes directly to our energy security and industrial growth,” the Minister emphasized.
The inauguration comes at a time when GNPC is undertaking major reforms and realignments aimed at modernizing its operations and improving its regional competitiveness. Just weeks ago, the Corporation reaffirmed its commitment to a forward-leaning gas strategy, emphasizing increased domestic supply from Jubilee and Sankofa fields, backing the Takoradi–Tema Interconnection Project (TTIP) with US$190 million, and exploring the development of an LNG import terminal by 2026.
At the 2025 West Africa Gas Summit, GNPC declared its ambition to become a regional gas anchor, with Acting CEO Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah unveiling a transformation agenda that targets new first oil within 24 months and seeks to reposition GNPC as a commercially competitive and technically agile national oil company.
The Minister acknowledged these ongoing efforts and reaffirmed the government’s intention to review the GNPC Act of 1983, which he described as outdated. He noted that with declining oil production and tightening reserves, GNPC must be equipped with the right legislative framework and institutional autonomy to attract investment and operate efficiently.
“We are committed to updating the GNPC Act to meet modern standards. This is a critical moment to reposition GNPC for the future,” Hon. Jinapor stated.
The new board is also expected to drive the performance of Explorco, GNPC’s upstream exploration subsidiary, and ensure that GNPC remains aligned with the government’s broader energy transition tramework, which aims to modernize Ghana’s energy systems while upholding international climate commitments.
Professor Joseph Oteng-Adjei — who chairs the new board — thanked President John Dramani Mahama for the confidence placed in the team, pledging a results-driven approach to reset GNPC’s strategic direction.
“This is a team of diverse professionals, and we are committed to addressing the challenges within the sector. We will work cohesively and seek guidance from the Ministry where necessary to move GNPC forward,” he said.
The newly inaugurated Board of Directors is as follows:
Prof. Joseph Oteng-Adjei – Chairman
Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah – Acting CEO
Hon. Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahim – MP
Hon. Seidu Alhassan Alajor – MP
Mr. Mawutor Agbavitor
Mr. Kwame Jantuah, Esq.
Mr. Andani Yakubu Abdulai (Yoo-Naa)
The Board’s inauguration marks the latest in a series of moves designed to realign GNPC with national development priorities, strengthen internal governance, and reinforce the Corporation’s position as a key lever in Ghana’s energy and industrial transformation.
