Nairobi, Kenya | August 8, 2025 - Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) has achieved three landmark milestones, underscoring its role as Kenya’s largest power producer, a technological innovator, and a champion of climate action.

In a major operational achievement, KenGen met Kenya’s highest-ever power demand of 2,284MW, recorded on July 26, 2025. This peak, driven by industrial and domestic consumption growth, was supplied entirely from KenGen’s diversified energy portfolio, which includes hydropower, geothermal, wind, and thermal generation. The company’s ability to meet this record demand reinforces its central role in ensuring grid stability and supporting Kenya’s economic growth trajectory.

KenGen has commissioned its first battery energy storage system (BESS) to power a commercial data centre. The system will enable uninterrupted operations for the facility, improving reliability while demonstrating the viability of battery storage for industrial applications. This milestone marks a new chapter in Kenya’s adoption of modern energy technologies, enhancing grid flexibility and resilience.

In its environmental stewardship efforts, KenGen has surpassed its annual tree-growing target, planting over 2.1 million trees against a target of 2 million. This initiative forms part of the company’s wider reforestation programme, aimed at restoring ecosystems, enhancing water catchment areas for hydropower, and contributing to Kenya’s national climate commitments.

These developments reflect KenGen’s integrated approach to energy leadership—meeting immediate power needs, investing in technology for future growth, and advancing sustainability goals. The combination of operational excellence, innovation, and environmental responsibility positions KenGen as not only a cornerstone of Kenya’s power sector but also a model for African utilities navigating the dual challenge of meeting rising energy demand while addressing climate change.

As Kenya’s energy landscape evolves, KenGen’s triple achievement in meeting record demand, pioneering battery storage, and exceeding climate action targets sends a clear signal of readiness to lead both nationally and regionally. The company’s ability to balance growth, reliability, and sustainability offers a blueprint for other emerging economies seeking to transition to a resilient, low-carbon power future.
