Ghana’s Petroleum Hub: Powering Africa’s Energy Future from Jomoro

The Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC) is spearheading Ghana’s ambitious plan to establish the nation as a dominant player in Africa’s energy sector. Under the leadership of CEO Dr. Toni Aubynn, the project is set to transform Jomoro into the “Rotterdam of Africa”—a world-class petroleum hub that will integrate refining, storage, and petrochemical industries, positioning Ghana as a key energy logistics center for the region.

This monumental project is designed to secure Ghana’s energy future by enhancing domestic refining capacity, reducing dependency on imported refined petroleum products, and creating a value-added petrochemical industry. The hub is expected to attract global investors and serve as a central energy corridor for West Africa, channeling crude oil to multiple refining units and facilitating large-scale exports of refined products.

At its core, the Petroleum Hub will host multiple high-capacity refineries, expansive tank farms for strategic petroleum reserves, and advanced petrochemical processing plants, all interconnected with cutting-edge transport and logistics infrastructure. This will ensure efficiency in the movement of crude oil, natural gas, and refined petroleum products across Ghana and neighboring markets.

The hub is projected to generate over 700,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing a significant boost to Ghana’s economy. It will catalyze skill development and create opportunities in engineering, logistics, and allied sectors. PHDC is prioritizing the training of local youth, ensuring they are equipped with the expertise to take on technical and managerial roles within the hub and beyond.

Dr. Aubynn reaffirmed that President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for the hub is not only about infrastructure but also about economic transformation, fostering industrialization, and solidifying Ghana’s position as an energy powerhouse in Africa. “This is a bold step toward energy security, industrial growth, and economic expansion,” Dr. Aubynn stated during a courtesy call on the Western Regional House of Chiefs in Sekondi. “We are not just building refineries and storage facilities; we are creating an ecosystem that will drive Ghana’s energy independence and global competitiveness.”

The strategic location of the Petroleum Hub in Jomoro ensures proximity to international shipping routes, making it an ideal gateway for crude oil imports and refined product exports. With a robust regulatory framework and strong governmental support, Ghana offers an attractive investment climate for international energy companies looking to tap into Africa’s growing demand for refined petroleum and petrochemicals.

As the project gains momentum, PHDC is actively engaging stakeholders, fostering partnerships, and ensuring the hub’s development is aligned with global best practices. Notably, traditional leaders in the Western Region have thrown their full support behind Dr. Aubynn and the Petroleum Hub Project, recognizing its potential to drive economic growth and create lasting benefits for local communities. With backing from both the government and the private sector, Ghana’s vision of becoming Africa’s foremost petroleum hub is steadily taking shape, marking a new era in the country’s energy landscape.
