Bui | 29 July 2025 - Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transitions, John Jinapor, has reaffirmed government commitment to energy sector transformation during a working visit to the Bui Power Authority (BPA), where he praised the Authority’s contributions to national grid stability and its expanding role in renewable energy deployment.
The visit comes amid growing momentum around Ghana’s energy transition agenda, with Bui Power emerging as a national leader in hybrid power development, combining hydro, solar, and soon wind to ensure reliability while cutting carbon emissions. Jinapor emphasised the importance of institutional innovation, welcoming the Authority’s hybridisation model as one that supports Ghana’s long-term energy security and climate objectives.
In a message that acknowledged both public concern and institutional realignment, the Minister addressed the ongoing debate over a potential merger between BPA and the Volta River Authority (VRA). While no final decision has been made, he assured stakeholders that any restructuring would be guided by efficiency and national interest.
The Minister also used the occasion to announce key sector-wide reforms, including the implementation of prepaid metering systems and a streamlined cash payment process, designed to improve revenue collection, reduce distribution losses, and enhance transparency across the power value chain. These measures are expected to accelerate financial recovery for state utilities and create a more predictable investment environment.
Bui Power has recently attracted attention not only for its operational performance but also for its role as a learning hub in the region. A high-level delegation from Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) visited the BPA as part of the Water Storage and Hydropower Conference 2025, underlining Bui’s growing influence in sub-Saharan Africa’s clean power dialogue. The Ghana Air Force’s recent visit to the Bui Generating Station further underscored the site's national strategic importance.
As Ghana advances toward a greener and more efficient power sector, Bui Power’s model, backed by ministerial endorsement and regional collaboration positions it at the forefront of a new era in African energy delivery.
