Houston, USA | August 8, 2025 - BP has announced a significant oil discovery at its Far South prospect in the Gulf of America, located in Green Canyon Block 584, approximately 120 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The deepwater find is a key step in BP’s plan to scale production from the region to more than 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) by 2030.

The Far South prospect was drilled to a total depth of over 25,000 feet and encountered high-quality oil-bearing reservoirs. BP has not yet disclosed resource volumes, but the discovery is expected to provide additional tie-back opportunities to existing infrastructure, supporting efficient and cost-effective development.

This find builds on BP’s long-standing position as one of the largest producers in the Gulf of America, where it currently operates five hubs and holds interests in a wide range of producing assets and exploration prospects. The company’s portfolio includes deepwater projects with high-margin barrels and long production lives, making the Gulf a strategic centre of its global upstream business.

BP describes the Gulf of America as a key growth engine for its oil and gas operations, supported by a strong pipeline of developments. Recent milestones—such as the early completion of the Argos Southwest Extension—demonstrate its ability to accelerate project delivery and enhance production capacity. The Far South discovery adds further momentum, reinforcing the company’s exploration strategy and its focus on maximising value from proven basins.

The company’s Gulf strategy also integrates safety, environmental stewardship, and technology deployment. By leveraging existing platforms and subsea infrastructure, BP aims to reduce development timelines, limit environmental impact, and optimise returns.

With Far South’s results now confirmed, BP will evaluate appraisal and development options to integrate the find into its production plans. The discovery underlines the enduring potential of the Gulf of America to deliver competitive, secure, and reliable energy supplies in the coming decade.
