NPA Chief Engages Western Region Tanker Drivers on Welfare and Sector Reforms

The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Edudzi Tameklo, has met with tanker drivers in the Western Region to address longstanding concerns about their working conditions - particularly salary-related grievances that have persisted across the transport segment of the petroleum downstream sector.

In the meeting, drivers raised issues about irregular and inadequate remuneration, which they argue does not reflect the nature of their work or the risks involved. They noted that despite being a vital link in Ghana’s fuel distribution chain, their pay remains disproportionate to their responsibilities.

Responding to the concerns, Mr. Tameklo disclosed that the NPA is developing a new regulatory framework aimed at ensuring fair compensation structures for tanker drivers. He emphasized that the initiative is part of broader efforts to discourage fuel diversion and enhance accountability across the sector. “The work you do is critical—not only for the fuel supply chain but for national economic stability,” Mr. Tameklo said. “We are working on a system that will support you and your families adequately. When finalized, you will be fully informed.”

The NPA head assured the drivers that their welfare is not an afterthought but a key part of policy reform being pursued under his leadership. The Authority, he noted, remains committed to balancing industry efficiency with the well-being of the human resource that drives it
