Egypt Strikes New Oil at Abu Sannan, Joins the Continental Drilling Drive

In a fresh push that underscores Africa’s continent-wide upstream resurgence, Egypt has reported a new commercial oil discovery at the Al Jahraa-14 well in the Abu Sannan concession. The find, announced in June 2025, is the latest result of ongoing exploration activities by Kuwait Energy Egypt (a subsidiary of United Energy Group), in partnership with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and Apex International Energy.

The well has already been tied into existing infrastructure, producing an initial output of 1,700 barrels of oil per day (bopd) and 4 million standard cubic feet of natural gas. More significantly, the discovery extends the reach of the productive Jahraa Formation, adding new recoverable reserves to Egypt’s upstream portfolio.

As the “drill, baby, drill” mindset gains momentum from West Africa to North Africa and beyond, Egypt’s latest success reflects the strategic value of mature fields, technical efficiency, and agile project execution. The Abu Sannan concession, located in the Western Desert, has become a focal point of activity, with this new discovery enhancing investor confidence in Egypt’s upstream potential.

The move comes as Egypt doubles down on a two-pronged energy strategy - expanding fossil fuel output while consolidating its role as a regional energy hub for both gas and renewables. The proximity of Abu Sannan to existing production and pipeline systems has enabled fast-track development, signaling a shift towards leaner, more responsive operational models across African petroleum markets.

In the context of an accelerating global energy transition, Egypt’s continued drilling activities reaffirm the stance of many African producers: that resource development is not only a sovereign imperative but a critical window for economic transformation. The discovery at Al Jahraa-14 reinforces Egypt’s determination to stay competitive in the narrowing fossil fuel market - contributing to both domestic energy security and regional supply resilience.

Africa’s upstream revival is in full motion - and Egypt’s Abu Sannan find is one more signal that the continent isn’t slowing down.
